Letter: GOP website wrong. Bi-partisan support for Kehoe Bill

From the Glastonbury Citizen, June 3, 2010

Website Wrong

To The Editor:

The front page of the May 27th Glastonbury Citizen included an article about a website that was created by Tom Kehoe’s opponents.  According to the article, the website included a criticism of Rep. Kehoe for proposing a particular bill that was designed to enhance road safety for all users, citing it as  “self-serving”.

In reading this article, I felt a strong personal and moral obligation to immediately correct the a possible misperception. I know for a fact that Rep. Kehoe did not conceive this idea and did not initiate this bill on his own. This is not an opinion, conjecture, or assumption, but a absolute fact. I know this because I was one of a group of individuals who approached hime wiht the idea for this bill and asked for his support.

At the time, I was serving as the Advocacy Chairperson of the Central CT Bicycle Alliance.  Along with several other bicycle and pedestrian advocates, representing a variety of organizations, I asked Rep. Kehoe for a meeting. We introduced the idea for this  bill, and asked for his support.  We, not Rep. Kehoe, initiated the idea.  Rep Kehoe heard our concerns and agreed to help with the sponsoring of this bill.

Please note that this was a bi-partisan bill that received wide support and easily passed the House, with 140 voting in favor and only 3 opposed. Something with this amount of support is not generally defined as “self-serving”.  Regardless of your political views or your views about this particular legislation, I feel that it is important to clarify the facts.

Respectfully Submitted,
